Well, after three years of 'joint work', we met in Raasepori for the final oficial meeting. Hopefully "Tales" will keep on growing and developing our pupils knowledge about each other's feelings and ways of living. Even though we are so distant as north and south can be we have built a huge bridge between us under "Book of Seasons". Let's keep it alive!

Maria and the portuguese 'Talers'

Project meeting in Raasepori, May 6-9, 2009

Tammisaari is now only one part of a greater municipality, which is called Raasepori in Finnish, Raseborg in Swedish. This is because three municipalities decided to unit into one, bigger town. Therefore our last project meeting was in Raasepori - two years ago we met in Tammisaari!

Our hosts had prepared everything so well that we, the guests were speechless out of amazement, such was their hospitality. We learned both of Finnish culture and also felt the warmthness of their hearts!

The official project program was to look back and evaluate the activities of the past two years. Our joint decision was to give them 4 points out of the 5 possible, i.d. almost all the goals that we set us in the beginning had been reached. But it is always possible to do even better, and we as humans alsways want to reach higher and do better!

After the final report was clear, the guests visited all the Comenius classes in Hakarinteen koulu. Later I will write more about the meeting, but now only some photos:

Raseborg takes its name of the old medieval castle which once was very important to the defence of the country and for trading. Because the land around the Baltic Sea rises all the time the castle is not any longer on the coast, but it is a tourist attraction.

At this time of the year there are a lot of white anemones in the woods around Tammisaari.

The school desks of the Finnish children caugth the attention of our school principal, Magnea.

The chief of the office of school and educational matters in Raseborg, Jukka Hautaviita, invited the guests to have a lunch with him and made a speech where he stressed the importance of people being together and learning from each other. Marjatta Ísberg, the project coordinator, thanked him on behalf of the guests.

Hyvää kesää - Have a nice summer - Thank you for the winter

We all surely join Sabina's and the Italians' wish of friendship that lasts longer than the project. Let us hopa that our schools will be bound together with a lasting bond.

Now that the winter is over - yes, according to the Icelandic calender tomight is the last day of the winter - there are only 15 minutes left of it when I am writing this - I, according to the old Icelandic traditions, wish you all a very good summer and thank you for the past winter. Since I cannot kiss you (also an Icelandic tradition), I send you a nice photo of two of our pupils, while they performed Sonia and Rosy during their visit to Digranes in 2008. They are dancing to the old tune of "My Grandpa and my Grandma live on a hill farm..."

VISIT FROM FINLAND IN CORDENONS !

We just had special guests from Hakarinne school: Taina, Heli, Anne and Eveliina here in our Circolo Didattico! Unfortunately they stayed here only two days, we definitively think time runs too fast during our Comenius meeting...

They visited the E. De Amicis where the pupils performed in English songs of seasons, and a special rehearsal “BIG BANG”, played with music and dance on how life came to earth, knowing the youngest later at the Gianni Rodari.

On Friday they where at the Duca D'Aosta where the second grades dramatised the seasonal stories: “The children's bridge” and “Winter's still here, Gran' ma !”.Pupils were just excited and curious and had the opportunity to ask them several questions as :”How old are you?” and “How do you feel during the Winter without the sun?” ,”How are your pupils like ?”.Taina answered humorously that in Finland teachers are always 25, and their age doesn't go neither up or down and pupils are the same ALL OVER THE WORLD, while Anne told them that during the winter she feels really sad. They were also surprised hearing Anne talking in Italian !

In the afternoon our guests took an historical tour, guiding Sonia & Alessandro (CICERONES) to the famous cultural heritage: Caorle, Portogruaro and Concordia Sagittaria. The visit was concluded by a gorgeous farewell party at Luciana's house, where our friendship became deeper and closer.

We all wish our cooperation will last after the end of the project !

Drama and musicals in Digranes

The annual drama festival of the younger pupils was held in Digranesskóli on March 25-27. Three different dramas - or stories with songs - were performed by the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade, each of them with its story. Thordis had practised the music and the class-teachers were "producers" and directors.

This is a big occasion and takes time to rehearse. Therefore we have been forced to keep "a low profile" on Comenius Tales activities.

This is the last school week before Easter holidays and we will be not be back until Wednesday April 15. After that we start full course on preparing the Big Comenius Festival, which will be held on April 22.

Food in March

Now than we have learned all about the Christmas, polite words and colours in the language of our partners, we are going to spend more time studying the numbers from one to sixteen. This month we are also going to write letters to our partners telling them some key words about food. We are going to exchange some basic words and learn them in the language of our partners. These words are:



milk, fish, bread, water, meat, butter, cheese, sugar


With these words I shall let here follow a picture which shows how some of the disabled children can express themselves: It says I wish to have an orange.

There are many other ways that disabled children can "talk" and it could be useful for us all to talk about this and find out what other ways there are.

Since our friends, the Hungarians, could not be with us, it occurred to me to let you know these words also in Hungarian. You have perhaps heard that Finnish and Hungarian are related languages. When you have got the Finnish words, you can compare them. Do you find similarities?

Fun with words

It was nice to see the photo of Portuguese pupils learning the partners' languages! We in Iceland have also been studying the words and some of them are really difficult!

Thordis is practising the songs with the pupils and the last season stories are to be finished in the next few days.

February has been cold here in Iceland and we have had a lot of snow. More snow means that the days are lighter and the children have more fun.

Myndin er úr þjóðsögunni um rjúpuna sem neitaði að vaða bál eins og María mey hafði skipað að gera. Hún er ein af þeim sögum sem nemendur okkar unnu að fyrir árstíðarbókina. Hér fyrir neðan sjáið þið portúgölsku nemendurna vinna að orðaþekkingu. Þeir hafa gert stórt plakat með orðunum á öllum tungumálum. Einn nemandi las alltaf eitt orð í einu og bekkurinn endurtók það. Þannig lærðu allir. Kennarinn segir að sum íslensku orðanna voru virkilega erfið.

Learning other languages

In Portugal, we are working and having fun with what we are doing.

We enjoyed very much learning icelandic, finnish and italian. Ricardo and Sérgio read each word and the other students repeated it. It has been very amusing, because there are very difficult words in finnish and icelandic. We found italian words similar to the portuguese ones.

We are also preparing some beautiful portuguese seasonal Tales, such as "The acorn and the pumpkin", or "The almond tree legend".

A very happy new year from Iceland to you all!

Just to tell you shortly what we are going to to this year:

• All the partners choose four folktales, one concerning each season, summer, autumn, winter and spring, and draw pictures to go with the text. When all the tales are ready, we are going to make a book out of them, a copy for each school - for the new generations to admire, hopefully!

• We are going to study to words we have sent though the folding game. Now new words in January, but in February we will learn some numbers in three new languages.

• We are also going to work on songs: a friendship song from each school. - And we hopa that friendship between the partners will go on, even after the formal project is over next spring!

We in Iceland have also made a short video out of the story that the children in Gianni Rodari made (using Icelandic drawings). In the video we used the puppets that the Portuguese children mad last spring. Here you can see a part of the video.

Púma hópur 6. bekkjar Digranesskóli gerði stutt myndband sem er lokastig á samvinnuverkefni vinaskólanna. Upphafið var teikningar sem bekkurinn sendi út fyrir um ári síðan. Ítalir tóku við myndunum, rýndu í þær og sömdu sögu út frá þeim. Potúgalarnir gerðu leikbrúður fyrir ítölsku söguna og sendu brúðurnar svo til okkar. Með brúðurnar og ítalska textann í höndunum gerðum við svo myndbandið nú í desember. Hér birtist hluti af því.

Saint Lucia's Day at the Hakarinne school

Each year on December 13 Saint Lucia is celebrated at the Hakarinne
school with candlelight and traditional candlelit processions of girls wearing white robes and singing a Lucia song while entering the room, to the melody of the traditional Neapolitan song Santa Lucia. Lucia herself was Christian and died for her faith. St. Lucia is the patron saint of the city of Syracuse (Sicily) where she was born.

This custom came to Finland from Sweden and it is still a very Swedish affair. Lucia is traditionally almost always blonde and she is singing in swedish.

During a dark winter in Scandinavia, the idea of light overcoming darkness, and the promise of returning sunlight has been welcomed. It is one of the few saint days observed
in Scandinavia.

PROJECT news and AUTUMN ACTIVITIES

Here in Italy even the youngest are working, believe it or not they're only five years old. Teacher Sabina came back from Iceland (perhaps I heard someone was complaining because didnt' like too much the substitute...) with so many things to study, we compared the Italian and Icelandic LAVA, we tasted some of your candies, we drew your flag, we received the nice Portuguese umbrella... we've been busy !
By the end of November the Spring tale is going to be completed and we can give you a little hint seeing at the drawing on the right side....

In Italia anche i più piccoli sono al lavoro ed hanno solo cinque anni.
La maestra Sabina è ritornata con molte sorprese e materiali da osservare, i bambini hanno fatto esperimenti confrontando la lava italiana e quella islandese, hanno assaggiato le caramelle islandesi, hanno disegnato le bandiere dei due paesi, hanno appeso la decorazione fatta dai bambini portoghesi... si sono impegnati tantissimo.!
Per la fine di novembre sarà finita la nostra storia sulla Primavera e ne pubblichiamo un'anteprima nel disegno a destra...


Rosy and Viviana attended in October to a meeting learning new procedure “M-TOOL project” on monitoring the project during all the steps and this week our Circolo was invited from the N. A. to represent our Region and our project to a national meeting in Pistoia. So our TALES are still travelling....even in Italy!
Since even the project's dissemination it's an important task, I just wrote an article after our visit in Iceland for a monthly magazine of our municipality so that every family might be informed about the Comenius activities in the schools and how these have been developed.

Rosy e Viviana hanno partecipato in ottobre ad un convegno dove è stato spiegato il nuovo sistema di monitoraggio on line M-TOOL e questa settimana il Circolo Didattico è stato invitato dall'Agenzia Nazionale a partecipare come referente regionale Comenius ad un convegno Nazionale a Pistoia. E' piacevole pensare che le nostre storie continuano a viaggiare... anche in Italia!
Dal momento che la disseminazione del progetto è un compito importante, ho appena finito di scrivere per il mensile edito dal nostro Comune un articolo per informare le famiglie riguardo le attività del progetto e la metodologia con cui queste sono state svolte.

We just came back from the meeting held in Digranesskòli. It was a great experience for all of us both to work as an European team and to see how well Icelandic pupils were prepared, performing Music with Thordis trough different languages.We could feel the warmth of the school welcome even if the weather outside wasn't really mild, in fact according to their calendar the first day of Winter was October the 25 th.:we had snow,wind and rain ! We enjoyed anyway our stay in Iceland and we will remember the wonderful lanscape with all the white mountains ranging above the sea....

Siamo appena rientrati dall'incontro tenutosi presso la Digranneskòli. E' stata un'esperienza davvero importante per ognuno di noi lavorare in un team europeo ed ammirare gli studenti islandesi, preparati da Thordis insegnante specializzata in musica, danzare e cantare in cinque lingue. Abbiamo apprezzato l'atmosfera accogliente ed ospitale della scuola, anche se il tempo fuori non era proprio clemente, infatti nel calendario islandese l'inverno inizia il 25 di ottobre!

La nostra permanenza è stata comunque indimenticabile e ricorderemo il paesaggio meraviglioso con le montagne innevate che si stagliano sopra il mare...

We had the chance to visit the classes, getting the possibility to talk with the students and their teachers, comparing our two school system organization. We particuraly appreciate the Icelandic way to carry on a flexible schoolyear schedule within the different laboratories: home economics, technical & textile and artistic. We were also amazed seeing how good were the girls working the wood and on the other side how well boys managed cooking!
We share the idea that pupils learn by doing trough active experience and the possibility to adopt or change if necessary between curricular subjects and more relaxing activities in order to allow a balanced growth of the child.

Abbiamo avuto la possibilità di visitare le classi, di dialogare con gli alunni ed i loro insegnanti, comparando i nostri sistemi scolastici. Abbiamo particolarmente apprezzato la maniera flessibile di gestire i laboratori durante l'anno scolastico, alternando attività più impegnative ad attività più rilassanti, permettendo una crescita armoniosa ed equilibrata del bambino e consentendo un'apprendimento attraverso l'esperienza diretta. Abbiamo constatato con meraviglia, quanto disinvolte fossero le bambine nel laboratorio di falegnameria ed i maschi in quello di cucina !

The meeting was also important focusing the tasks for this year, deciding how to carry out activities. Our new Principal Mrs Luciana Renna took part in the meeting and realized how important is the influence of an European project both for the staff members and for the pupils motivation. She went into the classroom congratulating with pupils for the work they have prepared with their teachers and yesterday talked to our monthly plenary teachers meeting about our visit.

Durante l'incontro abbiamo potuto definire le attività da realizzare quest'anno e condividere i materiali prodotti dai nostri alunni durante la realizzazione della Story Circle Task. Il nostro nuovo Dirigente Scolastico Mrs Luciana Renna ha partecipato al meeting ed al nostro ritorno ha desiderato personalmente congratularsi con gli alunni ed i loro insegnanti per i lavori inviati, informando in collegio docenti tutto il circolo dell'importanza di questa esperienza.

We came back empowered on our motivation and aware of the bond we've create during these three years with our European team.
So far I can personally say that on the part of even our little pupils they know they have new friends even if they haven't seen them yet!

Siamo ritornati sicuramente arricchiti , motivati e consapevoli del legame che si è venuto a creare in questi tre anni con i nostri colleghi europei.

Posso personalmente affermare che persino i nostri più piccoli alunni sanno di avere dei nuovi amici, anche se non li hanno mai visti!

Árlegur skipulagsfundur Comeniusverkefnisins „Tales of Europe – Promoting Creativity, Communication Skills and Cultural Awareness“ var að þessu sinni haldinn í Digranesskóla dagana 22.-24.okt. (miðvikud. til föstudags) og sátu fundinn fulltrúar allra samstarfsskóla okkar, þ.e.a.s. Finnar, Ítalir og Portúgalar.

Tekið var á móti gestunum í sal skólans þar sem Comeniusbekkirnir voru hver með sitt tónlistaratriði. Þórdís Sævarsdóttir tónlistarkennara hafði haft veg og vanda af þessari dagskrá. "Leynigesturinn" var ítalski kennarinn Alessandro sem hafði tekið með sér til Íslands sekkjapípuna sína og blés gamalt þjóðlag á henni. Einnig hafði Alessandro samið sérstakt lag, Vináttulag (Canzone dell' amicizia) fyrir Comeniusfólkið og kenndi það meðan á dvölinni stóð.

Gestirnir voru einnig viðstaddir lokatónleikum 7.Á. bekkjar á föstudaginn, en þá lauk formlega þemadögum Músíktilraunir sem eru árlegur viðburður hjá 7. bekkjum skólans. Milli þess að funda um málefni sem tengjast útfærslu verkefnanna heimsóttu gestirnir alla Comeniusbekkina í stofum þeirra, kynntu sér náms- og kennsluaðferðir hér og spjölluðu við nemendur. Þeir sýndu mikinn áhuga á verklegar námsgreinar og töldu að aðstaðan hjá okkur væri til fyrirmyndar. Hin nýi forstöðumaður Fræðslusviðs Kópavogsbæjar, Anna Birna Snæbjörnsdóttir, ásamt nánustu samstarfsmönnum sínum hafði svo móttöku fyrir gestina á föstudaginn. Eftir að formlegum fundardögum lauk, á laugardaginn, fóru gestirnir svo í “menningarreisu”, ýmist til að synda í Bláa lóninu eða aka hringinn um Gullfoss, Geysi og Þingvelli, en áður höfðu þau m.a. heimsótt Sögusafnið í Perlunni og skoðað gömlu handritin í Þjóðmenningarahúsinu.

Verkefnið og þau tengsl sem hafa myndast hafa verið mikil lyftistöng fyrir okkur í Digranesskóla og eflt kennara í starfi sínu. Með því að fá slíkar heimsóknir og fara sjálfur að kynnast skólastarfi annars staðar fá kennarar nýjar hugmyndir sem þeir geta síðan útfært og aðlagað að þörfum nemenda sinna. Heimsóknir erlendra kennara hafa einnig verið skemmtileg tilbreyting fyrir nemendur og gefið þeim tækifæri til að sýna hvað þeir geta. Eitt aðalmarkmiða verkefnisins er jú að fá okkur að skilja sérkenni okkar og þekkja eigin menningu en um leið greina það sem tengir þjóðirnar saman og gerir okkur alla að Evrópubúum.

SUMMARY IN ENGLISH:

Project meeting for „Tales of Europe– Promoting Creativity, Communication Skills and Cultural Awareness“ was this time held in Digranesskóli, Iceland on 22-24-25 October. All the partner schools, Finland, Italy and Portugal, had sent their representatives. For the opening day the Icelandic children had prepared a musical program, each class having a role in it. Responsible for this was Thordis the music teacher. The guests also attended the concert given by class 7.Á. on Friday. It was the outcome of the Musical Experiments which are a yearly event in Digranesskóli.

Later the guests also visited all the Comenius classes, made themselves acquainted with Icelandic teaching methods and teaching aids and chatted with the children. They were specially interested in the non-academic subjects, such as home economics, technical and textile works and arts teaching. Alessandro, one of the three Italian representatives, had made a special song of friendship (Canzone dell’ amicizia) for this occasion and he taught the pupils and the Comenius teachers. Hopefully it will be soon published here on the page. In between were the formal meeting hours when the tasks and different activities of the project year were discussed and decisions made.

The project and the connections it has created have been very important to all partners. To visit schools in other countries and get visitors from abroad, to get acquainted with different methods and attitudes, al this has a stimulating influence both on staff members and the pupils. What we see and here can serve as a source of empowerment and enhance creativity in all parties. At the same time as we learn about other cultures we feel our own identity more keenly, but also perceive the ties that bind us together so that we can say: I am a European.

Nú í vetur ætlum við að bera saman tungumálin fjögur, íslensku, ítölsku. portugölsku og finnsku. Við ætlum að velja nokkur algeng orð, skrifa þau niður, skiptast á í bréfum og bera svo saman. Getum við fundið eitthvað sameiginlegt með þeim? Eða eru þau gjörólík? New Comenius Year Starting

A new Comenius year will officially start in October, but both in Finland and in Iceland the teachers have been already preparing the tasks, planning activities and discussing the topics, since the school in these countries starts in August. In Italy and Lissabon the teachers come to school in the beginning of September, the pupils a bit later.

After the Lissabon meeting in April the puppets made during the year were sent to the next partner in the Story Circle line. The Portuguese puppets, which were supposed to come to us, were so big that they needed a huge box - two boxes actually!!! They arrived in mail in June. We in Digranesskóli did not tell the pupils in advance what there was in the boxes, only said that it was fragile. They were very exited to see what there would be in them, and it took a while for them to realize that it was the giant trolls that they had drawn themselves for a year ago, only now they had in their hands puppets that the Portuguese children had made! Everyone was cheerful and they paraded for the photographer with the trolls. The next task is to set up a play (drama) based on the story and played with the puppets.

Nýtt Comeniusár er að hefjast. Fyrsta verkefnið var að opna pakkana sem bárust til okkar frá Lissabon í júní. Við fengum þá á síðasta skóladegi og ákváðum þess vegna að geyma þá þangað til í haust og voru þeir í geymslunni hjá Þórdísi tónlistarkennara. Nú var komið að því að opna pakkana - sem í reynd voru tveir risastórir kassar. Allir voru mjög spenntir að sjá hvað í þeim væru. Við sem vorum í Lissabon í vor vissum það auðvitað en geymdum leyndarmálið vandlega. Og upp úr komu tröllabrúður sem portugölsku börnin höfðu gert á grundvelli teikninga sem 6.bekkur okkar gerði í fyrra. Það tók krakkana smátíma að átta sig á þessu en því fylgdi mikil kátína.

Verkefnisárið hefst formlega í öllum skólunum í október en við hér í Digranesskóla erum þegar að hefjast handa. Skipulagsfundur allra samstarfsskólanna verður hér dagana 22.-24.okt. og hlökkum við mikið til að fá erlenda gesti og sýna þeim skólastarfið og láta þá koma inn í bekkina til að kynna sig og landið sitt. Í fyrra t.d. lærðu krakkarnir bæði að syngja á portugölsku og dansa þjóðdansa þeirra.

"Harvesting" Comenius in Digranesskóli

On Tuesday, 3 June, the pupils of Digranesskóli invited their parents and family members to see the results of the Comenius activities of the spring term. In the school auditorium we showed samples of videos and PP presentations and the pupils sang the well-known children's song Head and shoulders in Finnish, Italian and Portuguese. At the end all the audience joined in singing and playing the song in Icelandic. On the "Comenius wall" in the school entrance we showed drawings from our three partner school and photos from the Lissabon meeting. Cds and other smaller items were in show-cases. The largest newspaper of Iceland, the Morgunblaðið, showed its interest by sending a journalist and a photographer. Everyone was very pleased, both the visitors and we here in the school.

Uppskeruhátíð Comeniusar var í Digranesskóla 3. júní og heppnaðist hún vel. Í sal skólans voru sýnd brot úr verkefnum vormisserisins, vídeómyndir og Power Point sýningar. Auk þess sungu börnin á tungumáli vinaskólanna. Hátíðinni lauk með því að allur salurinn söng Höfuð herðar hné og tær.

All the small - and bigger - animals

One of the compulsory tasks this school-year was a story about animals.

Finland, Italy and Iceland have alsready finished their task and are eagerly waiting for the Portugues story. - Actually the tale about the wonderful fife also had an animal - a donkey - in it.

Finland presents us a story about a mouse and her worries about her clothing - she was grey as a mouse and wanted more colours! Italy presented the story about the wolf and the fox, and as usually, the fox was clevered than the wolf. Iceland had two stories: The story about the sea-cows from Höfdi and the well-known tale about Búkolla, the milk-cow that disappeared - and was found again, as it should be in all godd stories. Now that the end of the school-year is near I wish you all a very good summer holiday and thank you, both pupils, teachers and other staff members for a fine year. You are all great and have done a very good job. See you fresh next autumn.
