Dear partners,

This morning we had a "parents´hour" - we had invited the parents to come and see what we have been doing this autumn term. It was only a short program, since the parents´oft have to hurry to their work. However, we felt that the parents do care about the school and want to see and hear what is going on, since our auditorium was quite full.

First the children sang Holy night (Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht) in Icelandic, Hungarian, Finnish and Italian - alas, we have not got the Portuguese version, but hopefully it can me amended for the next year. Then we showed bits of the Christmas videos. At the occasion the Parents´Club gave us a fine digital camera, Canon EOS. It is very precious to have such a strong bond with the parents.

Í morgun vorum við hér í skólanum með stutta dagskrá fyrir foreldra Comeniusbekkjanna þar sem við kynntum hvað hefur helst verið á döfinni. Börnin sungu Heims um ból á fjórum tungumálum, nemendur 2. bekkjar spiluðu á blokkflautu og svo var sýndir bútar af myndböndunum sem gerð voru í haust í kringum jólamöppuna. Við þetta tækifæri færðu fulltrúar Foreldrafélags Digranesskóla okkur verðmæta gjöf, Canon EOS myndavél sem mun án efa nýtast vel. Nú er skólinn orðinn mjög vel tækjum búinn og getur leyst jafnvel flóknustu verkefnin.


Comeniusverkefnið hefur verið okkur mjög dýrmætt, bæði vegna samvinnu kennaranna og áhuga sem það hefur vakið hjá nemendunum. Tilgangur verkefnisins er að kynna sér menningu annarra landa og uppgötva um leið sinn eigin bakgrunn og menningu og skynja hvað er svo sérstætt hjá okkur. Ég held að þetta hafi tekist prýðilega. Hér má nefna frábæra landkynningu sem nemendur 6.Á. gerðu í fyrra (þá 5.Á.) og settu í Power Point og þau leikrit sem byggð voru á íslenskum þjóðsögum og sett voru uppí fyrra og álfaverkefni nemenda annars bekkjar. Í jólamöppunni sem var verkefni liðins hausts rifjuðu nemendur okkar upp sögurnar um jólasveinana og lærðu um jólahaldið í vinalöndunum. Einnig æfðu þeir sönglög frá öðrum löndum og tengdust á þennan hátt menningu annarra. Nú er margt fram undan og vonum við að tónlistarlífið mun eflast enn meir undir stjórn Þórdísar.


Við í Comeniusteymi Digranesskóla óskum ykkur öllum gleðilegra jóla og farsælt komandi ár. Takk fyrir samstarfið í ár. Hlökkum til nýrra verkefna.

GREETINGS from ITALY & MORE

NICE MEMORIES...



While reorganizing files on my personal computer, I hit on a nice picture sent from Maria, entitled "The very beginning" taken on a very pleasant Christmas party, in December 2005. I believe our group is a a very friendly and creative team and it has been and it is really nice working together.



I 've told my children we've some friends quite far away from Cordenons .... we made this special drawing to wish you, once again , a BUON NATALE , to the older and the younger , this means 4 years old, all over Europe !


During this period I've been working on the tale sent from Iceland with my pupils. Today I e mailed the new story to Portugal. Children enjoyed this story a lot , actually they were really attracted by monsters, giants, goblins...They like to be scared, while listening, by frightening stories , it's a sort of strategy for them to remove fears .


In the picture below they represented three bad creatures on the top of the white mountain, one of them is griping a man, they imagined he wanted to SWALLOW him!


Their last tought was that if they will never travel to Iceland, they won't go up to the mountains neither to volcanos, while the full moon is shining in the sky, it could be too dangerous....

The Republic of Finland 90 years - Hakarinne Celibrates




The republic of Finland celibrates its 90th year on the 6th of December. It was during the first world war (1917) that the Finnish senate declared independancy from Russia and decided that the country should be a republic. Since the 6th of December is a holiday and the school is closed, the pupils and the staff of Hakarinteen koulu had their celibration the day before. Here we have some photos of the event. There are pupils of many nationality in Hakarinteen koulu and they played a role of ambassidors, each representing their country, like it is done at presidential invitations. On the other photo we see pupils and teachers in the Finnish national costume.
Lýðveldið Finnland heldur uppá 90. ára afmælið sitt í dag, 6.desember. Þar sem 6. des. er almenn frídagur í Finnlandi héldu nemendur vinaskólans okkar, Hakarinteen koulu, uppá afmælið hátíðlega daginn áður. Okkur bárust þessar og fleiri myndir í dag ásamt lýsingu á hátiðinni.
Á efri myndinni sjáum við nemendur skólans af ólíkum þjóðernum leika "sendiherra" upprunaþjóða sinnar og á efri myndinni eru nemendur og kennarar í þjóðbúningi. Konan til hægri er Anneli Piirainen sem heimsótti okkur hér í Digranesskóla í júní s.l.

Tales of Europe kynning / presentation



Tales of Europe verkefnið var kynnt í sérstökum bás í tengslum við ráðstefnuna um nýja menntaáætlun EBS og EEC landanna sem haldin var í Kennaraháskóla Íslands 4. des.



Tales of Europe and its products were presented at a conference which was arranged on the 4th of December by the National Agency of Iceland. On the wall there were drawings by the pupils (cf. the photo) and on the table in front of it we had cd and dvd discs, books and the activity report with the goals.
Many of the visitors showed interest to our project and asked for more information.

Tales Products at an Exhibition

The Icelandic National Agency will have a conference at the University of Education in Reykjavik next week, 4th December. They have asked Digranesskóli to have a stall there and show samples of products that the pupils have made within the Tales of Europe project. Especially they liked the books that we here in Digranesskóli made out of the tales that the partners produced last year. - Remember the laminated, colourful books that catch the eye? Such as The Seal's Skin (Iceland), The Story of Saint Encrácia (Portugal), Little Spiteful Riding-Hoods (Italy).

The coordinator will be there to answer the questions of the conference guests - and hopefully try to get more people interested in this kind of projects.

I hope this empowers you all - What we do seems to draw attention and admiration. I wish you all, both pupils and staff members of all partner schools a very good continuing Comenius and Tales year! The next step is to make the best of our Christmas portfolios visible!

Kópavogspósturinn - Local media in Kópavogur


Kópavogspósturinn hefur fylgt jólaballsfréttinni eftir og birti þessa mynd í tölublaði sínu 1.nóvember. Annars var blaðið aðallega helgað íþróttum. Gaman samt að blaðið veitir einnig okkur athygli þó að blöðin eins og Kópavogspósturinn hafa nóg efni frá auglýsendum.


This photo and some lines about how the project is going was published in our local paper the Kópavogspósturinn, on the first of November. It is nice that the local media remembers us, even if they need to give a lot of space to their sponsors.

Hrekkjavaka í Cordenons

Kennarar og nemendur skólans í Cordenons skrifa hér fyrir neðan um nýjan sið sem hefur rutt sér til rúms á Ítalíu (frá 1960-). Fólk hreinsar innan úr graskerum og býr til eftirlíkingar af hauskúpum svipað og gert er í Ameríku. Þessi siður er reyndar að breiðast út einnig hér á landi. Í greininni frá Cordenons er sagt að þessi siður eigi rætur að rekja til fornra Kelta sem gjarnan tóku hauskúpur óvinanna sem þeir höfðu drepið í orrustu og stilltu þær upp í glugga og víðar. Svolítið óhuggulegt, finnst ykkur ekki?

Pumpkins or skulls?

Since the beginning of the 1960s a curious spread tradition in Cordenons has been re-proposing a very ancient habit: making some feigned human skulls by using pumpkins.
In the last days of October parents and their children empty some pumpkins of all seeds and they cut out some holes, so that pumpkins look like skulls with well emphasized eyes, nose and mouth; then they put the pumpkins on the windowsills of the balconies; in the evening they light a candle and they put it inside the pumpkin. The purpose of the rite is to create fear and to frighten people.
This custom has an analogy with a tragic diffuse practice among the Celtic populations: after a fight between opposing tribes or a fighting, the winners took the killed enemies' skulls and they put them inside suitable niches alongside of the entry of the habitations. The human skull practically was a war trophy, preserved in sign of victory it was a symbol of strength.
Lately on the last Sunday of October an exhibition of carved pumpkins takes place in the main square of Cordenons. On this day Schools also exhibit their own products about the tradition of pumpkins and about Halloween too; nowadays many boys and girls dress up in strange costumes just like in the USA.

Zucche o teschi?
Una curiosa tradizione diffusa a Cordenons fin dagli inizi degli anni ’60 ripropone un’antichissima abitudine di costruire dei finti teschi umani con le zucche.
Verso la fine del mese di Ottobre gli adulti con i loro figli svuotano alcune zucche dai semi e praticano dei fori in modo da ottenere le sembianze di un teschio con occhi, naso e bocca ben evidenziati; poi mettono le zucche sui davanzali dei balconi; di sera accendono una candela e la mettono all’interno della zucca. Lo scopo del rito è quello di creare paura e di spaventare le persone.
Questa usanza ha un’analogia con una tragica pratica diffusa presso le popolazioni Celtiche: dopo uno scontro tra tribù avversarie o dopo un combattimento, i vincitori prendevano i teschi dei nemici uccisi e li racchiudevano all’interno di apposite nicchie costruite a fianco dell’ingresso delle abitazioni. Il cranio umano era praticamente un trofeo di guerra, conservato in segno di vittoria come simbolo di forza.
In questi ultimi anni nell’ultima domenica di Ottobre c’è un’esibizione di zucche intagliate nella piazza principale di Cordenons. In questa giornata le Scuole espongono i propri lavori inerenti alla tradizione delle zucche ed anche ad Halloween; oggigiorno molti ragazzi e ragazze si mascherano come nei Paesi Anglo-Americani.

Dissemination - Kópavogspósturinn miðlar


Now the pupils of Digranesskóli have carried out all the tasks needed for our Christmas portfolio. The only thing that is left is editing the videofilms - which, of course, is perhaps even a tougher task than the singing and making of Yuletide lads. Our local paper, Kópavogspósturinn (Mail from Kópavogur) published an article (18th Oct. ) about the project and the resent activities - a photo of it follows these lines.

Tökunum fyrir jólamöppu lauk í morgun, þegar allir bekkirnir söfnuðust í sal skólans til að syngja jólasveinarvísurnar undir stjórn Þórdísar. Nú hefst þá vinnan við klippingu og tilheyrandi. Stefnum að því að klára allt fyrir mánaðamót. - Kópavogspósturinn birti grein um verkefnið okkar þann 18.okt. Fyrir þá sem ekki sáu hana birti ég hér aftir af greininni.

STORY CIRCLE TASK from Italy

DELIVERY FROM ITALY TO PORTUGAL




Yesterday I sent to Maria as an attached file the pictures of our TALE and some information regarding the guidelines with a word file.



The second file might be useful for the teachers to understand the sequence of the story even if we are supposed toreveal it at the end of the year.



I would like to remember to our Portuguese colleagues that they have five days to download the file after while the mail server will cancel it.



Now a litlle hint to all our Talers , our story is entitled "The child in the bag" and the drawings were created by our 4 th grade pupils at the E. De Amicis Primary School.



I hope you will enjoy our job, have a nice time developing a new story with all your creativity and imagination!

Christmas portfolio in making- Jólamappa í bígerð


Pupils of Digranesskóla have been the past days busy in creating a Christmas portfolio that is going to present the essentials of Icelandic traditions. The main theme has been the Yuletide lads. All the work was highlighted in a real Christmas ball - held on the 17th of October!!! Júlíus, teacher of class 5.J. was the cameraman, Ragna and Erna, school assisstants, acted as two lads giving the children apples while other staff members sang and danced around the Christmas tree with the children. Thórdís, our music teacher, has been diligently shooting the musical part of the portfolio and also the most of the poems that tell us about the Yuletide lads, their parents and the famous cat that eats both children and gwon-ups.

Nemendur Digranesskóla hafa verið í óða önn að undirbúa "jólamöppu" sem á að sýna það helsta í hefðbundnum íslenskum jólasiðum. Við ákváðum að einbeita okkur að jólasveinunum og jólaballinu.

One group of pupils also maked Christmas cookies. The recipé with the photos will be sent to our friends in Finland, Italy, Hungary and Portugal.

Einn hópur bakakaði einnig jólapiparkökur undir leiðsögn Hafdísar Erlu heimilisfræðikennara. Uppskriftin ásamt myndunum fer til vinaskólanna.

Yuletide lads - Íslensku jólasveinarnir


Now the children in Digranesskóla are finishing their work on the Icelandic Yuletide lads - who nota bene, are quite different from the read and white American CocaCola Santas! The after tomorrow we shall have a real Christmas ball - in an Icelandic way.

Jól í október !- Christmas in October

Nú er nýtt Comeniusarár hafið hjá okkur. Á haustmisseri eru þrjú verkefni 1) teiknimyndasaga sem er byggð á íslenskri þjóðsögu, 2) semja texta við finnska teiknimyndasögu og 3) "jólamappa" (Christmas portfolio) þar sem við kynnum vinaskólum okkar íslenska jólasiði.

Ákveðið hefur verið að vinna jólamöppuna á tímabilinu 10.-17.okt. og lýkur þessum þemadögum með alvöru jólaballi miðvikudaginn 17.okt. og hefst ballið kl. 8.05. Vonandi geta sem flestir mætt í "jólafötunum", bæði börnin og foreldrarnir. Ballið verður tekið upp á vídeó, sett á DVD disk og sent til vinaskólanna svo að börnin úti í löndum geti séð hvernig við höfum það hér. Þórdís tónmenntarkennari og Margrét danskennari sjá um um ballið en annars er jólaverkefnið i höndum umsjónarkennara. Einn hópur mun einnig baka piparkökur með Hafdísi í heimilisfræði.

Auk þess verður unnið að verkefni um íslensku jólasveinana , Grýlu, Leppalúða og jólaköttinn og s.k. söguaðferð (Storyline) notuð í vinnunni.

Þáttakendur:
Bekkirnir 1 K, 1Þ, 3I, 3S, 5J, 5R, 6A, 6Á

Teiknimyndasagan er þegar tilbúin og unnu að henni nemendur 5. bekkjar undir leiðsögn Svanfríðar myndmenntakennara. Byggt var á söguna "Trunt, trunt of tröllin í fjöllunum" en textinn er í Rauðkápu nemendunum kunnur.

Hér er bóndinn eftir að hann breyttist í tröll. Teikning eftir nemendur 5. bekkjar. Drawing by the pupils of the 5th grade, based on an Icelandic folktale. Will be sent to Cordenons, Italy.

Still waiting for Portugal-Nýjustu fréttir

Hello, lovers of tales.

Now Finnland and Iceland have aldready been for ca. one month at school, Italy started 12th Sept. But we are still waiting for an answer from the Portuguese National Agency. They have not been able to decide whether Maria's school should get a grant for continuing the project. Hungary, alas, failed to get a renewal. Tamas the school coordinator tells us that Hungary as a country got less money from the European funds than usually. Therefore the National Agency had to cut down their budget and Deák Diák Iskola was not elected. We are sorry about that, but hope to cooperate with the Hungarians on another level. They will always be our friends.

The theme of the autumn term in Tales of Europe is CHRISTMAS - YULETIDE. Each school is supposed to compile a portfolio about their Christmas traditions - including songs, tales, and all the things that we will teach the others. Deadline for this portfolio is 15th Nov. (must arrive by that time).

Another, separate task was a cartoon of a FOLKTALE (= joint product).
The fact that Hungarians are not with us creates a problem: The next project meeting was supposed to be in Budapest in October and then the partners were supposed to come with their cartoons. Now it seems that the project meeting must either be postponed, while we are looking for a new place - or the meeting will be on line. The cartoons must simply be mailed by ordinary mail or scanned and send in a digital form, which I think is the easiest way.
Best wishes to everyone. Let the parents know about the blog and do write yourselves in your native language. Put photos of pupils' work to show the other partners.

Comenius 1 verkefnið Tales of Europe eða Sögur frá Evrópu hefur fengið framhaldsstyrk fyrir næstu tvö árin og mun því halda áfram. Á þessu ári reynum við að vinna aðeins öðruvísi en í fyrra og reyna að fá alla bekkina að vinna að sameiginlegum verkefnum. Á haustmisseri ætlum við að búa til "möppu" með efni sem tengist íslenskum jólum og eru þarna jólasveinarnir efstir. Kennararnir hafa valið kvæðin eftir Jóhannes frá Kötlum og Þórdís tónlistarkennari ætlar að æfa söngva sem tengjast efninu. Eins og í fyrra þá verður allt efnið fært í tölvutækt form.
Þegar verkefnið hófst þá vorum við fimm lönd, Ungverjaland, Portúgal, Ítalía og Finnland auk okkar. Nú hefur skólinn í Ungverjalandi því miður fengið neitun og dettur því úr verkefninu. Ennþá hefur ekki borist svar frá Portúgal en bæði Digranesskóli, skólinn á Ítalíu og skólinn í Finnlandi hafa fengið staðfestingu á framhaldsstyrknum.
Þar sem breytingar hafa orðið á kennaraliði Digranesskóla hefur það einnig haft í för með sér breytingar á því hverjir eru með í þessum verkefnum. Á þessu ári eru það bekkirnir 1G, 1K, 3I, 3S, 5J, 5S, 6A og 6Á.
Ég hvet ykkur á fylgjast með vefinn. Hér verða birtar fréttir af verkefninu, myndir o.fl. Eldri börnin geta jafnvel notað enska textann til að æfa sig að skilja málið, en samskiptamál verkefnisins er enska.

New Tales-year starting

Hello everybody,
Sabina from Cordenone sends her regards to everyone. Italy has got the two-year grant for carrying out the Tales of Europe project. We are very happy about that. So far I have not got any news from the others. Portugal and Hungary are still having there summer holiday, but the schools in Finland and here in Iceland start in August. The schools in Cordenone do not start until Sept. 12.
As soon as I get further information I shall let you know in this page.
We all look eagerly forward to a new school-year with the tales and musical heritage of the five participating countries!

Visit from Finland and happenings in Italy and Hungary

Hello, everybody!



Now most of the partner schools have either closed or are about to close for the summer season. Italy has had a nice exhibition, which Sabina writes about. Tamás from Hungary has also told me that their school had a two day fair on 10-11 June with shows and exhibits of Comenius activities from all partner schools.

I have myself finished the paper work, both the activity report and money side of it and have chosen exhibits of the work we did to our National Agency.




During the last schooldays we had two visitors from Finland: Matti Piirainen, the headmaster of Hakarinteen koulu in Tammisaari and his wife, Anneli, who is a classteacher in the same school. Anneli taught the 5th grade this schoolyear, but next year she will be with the first grade and is going to lead her new pupils to our Comenius project.

Matti and Anneli visited our classes and the students were eager to show what they knew. Class 5.Á. was with a presentation of Iceland ...in English!!! They were very proud of themselves. Thordis welcomed the visitors with the "Comenius songs" in Icelandic, Finnish and Italian...which reminds me that we have not got any good and simple song from Hungary and Portugal for our students to learn. So, please, hurry up! We want to learn them before the next meeting.




I shall put some photos of the visit here. - Hope that Tamás writes about their exhibition and how it went. Perhaps some photos, too!

" NOW I KNOW "






NOW I KNOW..


Questo è il titolo della rappresentazione alla quale sono stati invitati i genitori degli alunni delle classi quinte della Scuola Primaria di Cordenons, Duca D'Aosta a conclusione del primo anno di attività del progetto Comenius.Il risultato finale di questo primo anno è stato un percorso didattico interdisciplinare che ha visto gli alunni coinvolti nello studio della lingua italiana, dell' inglese, della geografia, della storia, nell'utilizzo delle nuove tecnologie per la ricerca dei dati e per la stesura del lavoro stesso, della musica e dell'educazione all'immagine.









This the title of the exhibition of our 5 th grade pupils of the primary school Duca D'Aosta, Cordenons, for their parents, within the conclusion of the first year project .The outcome of the schoolyear activities was a cross curricular research in Italian and in English of the four country involved in the project. The pupils had the opportunity to show their parents how they managed to study different subjects as History, Geography, Italian and English and Arts illustrating it through the New Technologies.They also performed the music learned and composed for the project "Bussame al me Friul", by teacher Sonia and Alessandro.





A questo lavoro di verifica finale è stato dato il titolo "NOW I KNOW.." proprio per la volontà di sottolineare il percorso di conoscenza svolto dai bambini durante tutto l'anno, e la poosibilità offerta dal progetto di avvicinare gli studenti a culture, lingue e tradizioni diverse da quelle di appartenenza, ampliando i loro orizzonti. La documentazione di questo lavoro, insieme alla Leggenda di Cordenons, sarà offerta agli altri paesi durante l'incontro di progetto a Budapest.



This conclusion represents a positive ostensive evaluation of the project for the teachers, for our students and for our community because has given a real choice approaching different cultures and traditions within Europe, widening our students' horizon and getting more aware of their own identity.The documentation of this work, together with the Cordenons Legend, presented during the evaluation meeting of May, will be ready as a DVD for the next meeting in Budapest.

The new logo of the project


Now we have finally got all the votes in the finals of the logo competition. Many have complained that the finalists did not meet all the criteria set for the logo: It was supposed to symbolize the contents of the project: Tales in the widest sense (i.e. told in words, drawings and music), connecting countries and nations AND it should be designed in the way that it should be easy to diminish it - logos are normally small!

Well, even so, the pupils have spoken! According to the rules of the competition it was the votes of the pupils that counted. This is like Eurovision competition: Quite a lot of people did not agree that the Serbian piece was the best one, but it got the most votes and it is the rightful winner! In the same way in this logo competition only five propositions got into the finals and the winner was the one that got the most "twelves".

CONGRATULATIONS, ITALY AND CORDENONS!!! May we now have the name of the winner????
